How Gun Control Killed The Students At Virginia Tech

As many in this country are already aware, over 30 people were killed April 16, 2007 at Virginia Tech by a South Korean national. I won't go into the details because every news agency is already covering the story, and there's nothing more I can add. What I do wish to discuss is the issue that is looming after the shootings, gun control. Liberals are already calling for further constriction of our second amendment rights:

"First, may I send my sincere condolences to your countrymen that have and are suffering after the horrific shootings at Virginia Tech. What most people outside of the U.S. can't understand though is that this is not the first, and it won't be the last - because of people's pathological love affair with firearms." - Gary (Cambridge, England)

"But it is the case that 11 years ago we took action to limit the availability of guns and we showed a national resolve that the gun culture, that is such a negative in the United States, would never become a negative in our country." - Prime Minister of Australia

"Yesterday’s mass shooting at Virginia Tech - the worst in American history - is another horrifying reminder that some of the gravest dangers Americans face come from killers at home armed with guns that are frighteningly easy to obtain." - New York Times

I think the best place to start would be looking further into the article by the New York Times:

"this will turn out to be another instance in which an unstable or criminally minded individual had no trouble arming himself and harming defenseless people." (emphasis added)

I firmly believe if the students and faculty had been allowed their second amendment rights there would not be 32 people dead today. The only reason there are defenseless people in this country is because of laws passed inhibiting their ability to defend themselves. Gun control only effects those who are law-abiding citizens. Criminals, by definition, will break the law. Law-abiding citizens who are unable to defend themselves are killed because a criminal is given free reign to wreak havoc.

According to an article on GunTalk, a bill was introduced a little over a year ago in Virginia that would have allowed students and staff to carry concealed weapons on university property:

Barely more than a year ago House Bill 1572 couldn't even make it out of committee in the Virginia General Assembly. The bill would have made it legal for students and staff at Virginia universities to have guns for their own protection. Today's shooter did not wait for such a law, and took advantage of the government-mandated victim-state.

When House Bill 1572 was defeated, state newspapers reported: "Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. 'I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus.'"

No Mr. Hincker, the defeat of House Bill 1572 likely caused the deaths of many innocents!

So what do we need to do to prevent this from happening again? Ban firearms? It wouldn't have helped here. Laws preventing firearms on school property were not headed by this criminal. Ban high-capacity magazines? It wouldn't have helped here. Witnesses said the criminal carried many magazines on his person. It wouldn't have mattered if they were 10 shot or 30 shot. Police didn't help at all either, there were at least 2 hours between the original shooting of his girlfriend and the massacre across campus.

The answer to this and all future violence and terror is to allow our law-abiding citizens to be armed and unhindered at all times.
